Avianca Cancels Direct Flights from San Jose

Flights from San Jose to New York, Los Angeles, Havana, Quito and Guayaquil will now stop in El Salvador or Colombia.

Friday, February 28, 2014

Avianca announced the cancellation of five direct flights from San Jose, as part of a restructuring program that the company is undertaking. Flights to Los Angeles, New York, Havana, Quito and Guayaquil, will leave the country but will now stop in El Salvador or Colombia.

"... The changes respond to improvement in the profitability of these direct destinations, because the number of Costa Ricans traveling on them was not profitable," said Claudia Arenas, director of corporate communications of the company in an article in Nacion.com.

"... The good thing about this change is that the frequency of flights to the aforementioned destinations has been increased, for example, at the moment there is a daily flight between San Jose and Los Angeles, but with the change, there will be three daily flights, though they will stop in El Salvador," he added.

The change being made by the airline also involves the dismissal of 261 people in the country. "We are required to make a reduction of 261 employees, but number of employees is still over 1,000."
