The aim of the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer) is to integrate in a single digital process, the more than 68 procedures that currently must be carried out in different ministries and municipalities to open and operate a business in Costa Rica.

In parallel to the 12 procedures that would already be in the test phase, reports that "... the integration of the systems of several entities involved in 19 procedures for registration and operation of companies has been promoted."

"... Of these, 15 procedures have been "finalized": the consultation of arrears in the Costa Rican Social Security Fund and in the Family Allowance Fund, the Civil Registry and legal status, and small and medium enterprises."

The success of this process of integration and digitalization of procedures will depend exclusively on the impact it may have on improving the investment environment and attracting more foreign investment.

For the Costa Rican Union of Chambers and Associations of the Private Business Sector (Uccaep), is necessary to "... digitize procedures in municipalities (especially coastal) for companies, construction, foreign trade and start operations."

Fewer New Businesses in Guatemala

May 2018

The number of mercantile companies that requested incorporation in the first quarter of the year decreased by 10% with respect to the same period in 2017.

The slow pace with which bank credit to the private sector has grown also reflects the lack of dynamism in the creation of new companies in Guatemala. The corruption cases that have not ceased appearing in the government and the suspension of operating permits, such as those for Minera San Rafael, are affecting credibility and confidence in investments.
