Rice: Honduras Largest Importer in the First Quarter of 2021

In the first quarter of 2021 the main rice importing country in Central America was Honduras with $21 million, purchases to the United States, Costa Rica, Argentina and Mexico increased by 80.78%, 4.1%, 3.55% and 2.74%, in their order.

Honduras, Maximum Buyer
During the first quarter of 2021, the main importer of rice in Central America was Honduras, with $21 million, followed by Panama with $10 million, Costa Rica with $9 million, Guatemala with $8 million, Nicaragua with $7 million and El Salvador with $6 million.

Regarding the year-on-year variation of purchases, only three countries recorded increases, among them Honduras with an increase of 204.1%, while in Nicaragua it was 131.6% and in Panama 3.9%.

In the first quarter, the countries that recorded a decrease in imports were Costa Rica (42.8%), Guatemala (21.4%) and El Salvador (13.4%).

Regional Business Upwards
Between the first quarter of 2020 and 2021, the imported value of rice in the region recorded an increase of 8.03%, going from $51.4 million to $60.1 million.

For the quarters under analysis, purchases from companies in the United States, Costa Rica, Argentina and Mexico increased by 80.78%, 4.1%, 3.55% and 2.74%, in that order.

U.S. and Uruguay, Main Suppliers
During the first quarter of 2021, 80.78% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 4.1% from Costa Rica, 3.55% from Argentina, 2.33% from Uruguay, 2.74% from Mexico, 1.97% from El Salvador, 1.26% from Paraguay, 1% from Honduras, 0.79% from Nicaragua and 0.23% from Ecuador.

In recent years Costa Rica is one of the markets of origin of imports that have grown the most, since in 2012 regional purchases from the South American country represented 0.37% of the total and in 2021 the proportion rose to 4.1%.

Sausages: Purchases from Mexico Up 17%

From January to March of this year countries in the region imported $4.1 million worth of sausages from Mexico, 17% more than what was purchased in the same period in 2017.

Car Batteries: Trade between Mexico and Central America

July 2018

In the first quarter of 2018, Central American countries imported $19 million worth of car batteries from Mexico, and 49% were bought by companies in Guatemala and Honduras.
