Costa Rica, Top Buyer
From January to March 2019, the main importer of rice in Central America was Costa Rica, with $18 million, followed by Nicaragua, with $11 million, Guatemala and Panama, with $9 million each, Honduras, with $5 million, and El Salvador, with $4 million.

Regional Business Upwards
Between the first three months of 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value of rice imports fell by 12%, from $64 million to $56 million.

Like total purchases, for the periods in question imports from Brazil also reported a drop, in this case was 63%, going from $17 million to $6 million.

Origin of Imports
From January to March 2019, 62% of the value imported from Central America came from the U.S., 14% from Argentina, 11% from Brazil, 3% from Paraguay and 3% from Uruguay.

For the period in question of the last eight years Argentina is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most, since in 2012 there were no purchases in the region and in 2019 it accounted for 14% of Central American purchases.

In the first nine months of 2018 rice imports in Central America totaled $ 254 million, and purchases from companies in Brazil grew 251% over the same period of 2017.
