Aluminum in Central America: Imports up to June 2018

During the first half of the year, the countries of the region added $299 million in aluminum and its Manufactures, and 66% was imported by companies in Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama.

Imports by country
From January to June 2018, the main importer of aluminum and its manufactures in the region was Guatemala, with $83 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $62 million, Panama, with $53 million, El Salvador with $47 million, Honduras with $35 million and Nicaragua, with $19 million.

Origin of regional imports
During the first half of the year, 18% of the value imported by Central America was from China, 15% from the U.S., 11% from Belgium, 8% from Mexico and 4% from Brazil.

For the January-June period of the past seven years, China is the fastest-growing market of origin for purchases, representing 11% of the total value of regional purchases in 2012, and this year that share rose to 18%.

Variation in regional imports
Between the first semester of 2017 and the same period of 2018, the volume imported of aluminum and its manufactures registered an increase of 27%, from 78 thousand tons to 99 thousand tons.

During the periods in question, the imported value increased slightly, by 0.42%, from $298 million in 2017 to $299 million in 2018.

Regional Aluminum Imports Up 8%

May 2018

Last year the region bought $618 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from abroad, 8% more than in 2016, and 17% of imports came from the US.
