Aluminum in Central America: $143 million Worth of Imports

During the first quarter of the year, countries in the region purchased a total of $143 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures, and 48% was imported by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Imports by country 
From January to March 2018, the main importer of aluminum and its manufactures in the region was Guatemala, with $40 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $29 million, Panama, with $25 million, El Salvador with $21 million, Honduras with $17 million and Nicaragua, with $11 million.

Origin of regional imports 
During the first quarter of the year, 20% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 14% from the US, 12% from Belgium, 8% from Mexico and 4% from Brazil.

For the period from January to March in the last seven years, China was the market of origin of purchases that grew the most, as in 2012 it represented 10% of the total value of regional purchases, and this year that proportion rose to 20%.

Variation of regional imports 
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the import volume of aluminum and its manufactures registered a decrease of 11%, falling from 40,000 tons to 36,000 tons.

In the periods in question, the import value also registered a decrease, in this case of 8%, going from $155 million in 2017 to $143 million in 2018.

In the first quarter of the year, Costa Rica imported $8 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from the Asian country, 47% more than in the same period in 2017.

Regional Aluminum Imports Up 8%

May 2018

Last year the region bought $618 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from abroad, 8% more than in 2016, and 17% of imports came from the US.
