Aluminum: Regional Purchases Grow at 8%

During the first three months of 2019, the countries of the region added $155 million in purchases of aluminum and its manufactures, 8% more than what was reported in the same period of 2019.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to March 2019, the main importer of aluminum and its manufactures in the region was Guatemala, with $42 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $34 million, Panama, with $25 million, El Salvador with $24 million, Honduras with $19 million and Nicaragua, with $11 million.

Top Sellers
During the first three months of 2019, 25% of the value imported by Central America came from China, 10% from the U.S., 6% from Mexico, 5% from Brazil and 4% from Belgium.

For the period from January to March of the last eight years, China is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most, since in 2012 represented 10% of the total value of regional purchases, and in 2019 that proportion rose to 25%.

Regional Business Upwards
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the volume imported of aluminum and its manufactures registered a 16% increase, rising from 36 thousand tons to 42 thousand tons.

For the periods in question the imported value registered an increase, in this case of 8%, from $143 million in 2018 to $155 million in 2019.

Aluminum in Central America: $143 million Worth of Imports

During the first quarter of the year, countries in the region purchased a total of $143 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures, and 48% was imported by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Regional Aluminum Imports Up 8%

May 2018

Last year the region bought $618 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from abroad, 8% more than in 2016, and 17% of imports came from the US.
