Aluminum: Regional Purchases Fall 17%

During the first quarter of this year, imports of aluminum and its manufactures in Central America totaled $128 million, 17% less than what was reported for the same period in 2019, a drop that is explained by the decrease in purchases in most markets.

Guatemalan companies, main buyers
From January to March 2020 the main importer of aluminum and its manufactures in the region was Guatemala, with $34 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $28 million, El Salvador, with $21 million, Honduras, with $20 million, Panama, with $18 million and Nicaragua, with $9 million.

From January to March, purchases by Honduran companies were the only ones that increased year-on-year, increasing by 4%.

In the cases of El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua they decreased by 16%, 17% and 18%, respectively.

Guatemalan and Panamanian purchases were the ones that decreased the most for the quarter in question, falling by 20% and 29%, in that order.

Main Sellers
During the first three months of 2020, 29% of the value imported by Central America came from China, 11% from the USA, 7% from Mexico, 4% from Brazil and 3% from India.

For the period from January to March of the last eight years, China is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most, since in 2012 it represented 10% of the total value of regional purchases, and in 2020 that proportion rose to 29%.

Regional Business Downwards
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period in 2019, the imported value of aluminum and its manufactures registered a 17% drop, from $155 million to $128 million.

During the first quarter of the year, countries in the region purchased a total of $143 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures, and 48% was imported by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Regional Aluminum Imports Up 8%

May 2018

Last year the region bought $618 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from abroad, 8% more than in 2016, and 17% of imports came from the US.
