Aluminum: Purchases Fell 19% in 2020

During 2020, imports of aluminum and its manufactures in Central America totaled $480 million, 19% less than what was reported in 2019, a drop that is explained by the decline in purchases from all markets in the region.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In 2020 the main importer of aluminum and its manufactures in the region was Guatemala, with $137 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $106 million, El Salvador, with $79 million, Honduras, with $72 million, Panama, with $54 million and Nicaragua, with $33 million.

Last year, purchases from all Central American markets decreased. In the cases of Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica, they decreased by 3%, 4%, 12% and 16%, respectively.

Guatemalan and Panamanian purchases were the ones that decreased the most during the period in question, falling by 17% and 48%, in that order.

Main Suppliers to the Salvadoran Market
During 2020, 33% of the value imported by Central America came from China, 11% from the USA, 7% from Mexico, 2% from India and 2% from Spain.

In recent years China was the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most, since in 2012 it represented 11% of the total value of regional purchases, and in 2020 that proportion rose to 33%.

Regional Business Downward
Between 2019 and 2020 the imported value of aluminum and its manufactures registered a 19% drop, going from $592 million to $480 million.

In contrast to the downward behavior of general imports, purchases from China increased 12% for the periods in question, going from $140 million to $157 million.

Aluminum: More Business with Mexico

November 2018

During the first nine months of 2018, the region's countries imported aluminum and its manufactured products from Mexico for $38 million, 3% more than what was purchased in the same period of 2017.

Metal Products: Trade Between Mexico and Central America

April 2018

In 2017, Central America countries imported $96 million worth of various common metal manufactures from Mexico, 14% more than what was purchased in 2016.
