Aluminum: Growing Trade between Costa Rica and China

In the first quarter of the year, Costa Rica imported $8 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from the Asian country, 47% more than in the same period in 2017.

Variation of imports 
Between the first three months of 2017 and the same period in 2018 the import value of aluminum in Costa Rica decreased from $36 million to $29 million, which is equivalent to a 20% decrease. 

For the periods in question, the value imported from China grew by 47%, going from $5.2 million to $7.6 million, and from Mexico it grew by 27%, going from $2.1 million to $2.7 million.

Origin of imports 
During the first quarter of 2018, 26% of the value imported from Costa Rica came from China, 18% from the US, 9% from Mexico, 7% from Guatemala and 5% from Panama.

China is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last seven years.  In 2012 it represented 16% of the total import value, and this year the figure reached 26%.

During the first quarter of the year, countries in the region purchased a total of $143 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures, and 48% was imported by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.
