Food: Prices in Central America - June 2015

Food inflation in June registered a variation of -0.4% in Nicaragua, -0.3% in El Salvador , 0.3% in Panama, 0.4% in Costa Rica, 0.9% in Guatemala and 0, 5% in Honduras.

"Nicaragua had the lowest rate of food inflation of the countries monitored in the subregion, with -0.4%, down 0.7 percentage points from May. The food inflation rate of El Salvador was -0.3%, down 0.5 percentage points from May.

In Panama food inflation for June was 0.3%, down 0.2 percentage points from May.

In Costa Rica, food inflation in June was 0.4%, 1.9 percentage points higher than in May. In Guatemala the rate was 0.9%, an increase of less than 0.1 percentage points. In Honduras food inflation reached 0.5%, 0.2 points higher than in May. "


From a statement by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO):

August 6, Santiago, Chile - In June, monthly food inflation in Latin America and the Caribbean was 0.7%, dow 0.1 percentage points compared to May, maintaining a downward trend in the last three months.

According to the Monthly Report on FAO Prices, food inflation in the region has been experiencing a slowdown since April, in part because of minor variations in food prices of the largest economies in South America.

In the seventh month of the year, FAO's food price index rose 2% over the same month in 2018, again explained by the increase in the prices of cereals, meat and sugar.

» The FAO Food Price Index* (FFPI) averaged 170.9 points in July 2019, down 1.1 percent (1.8 points) from June but 2.3 percent higher than in July 2018.

In the sixth month of the year, the FAO food price index increased by 1% compared to the same month in 2018, explained by the increase in the prices of cereals, meat and sugar.

From FAO's monthly report:

The FAO Food Price Index* (FFPI) averaged 173 points in June 2019, down marginally (0.3 percent) from May and very close to its level in June 2018.

In June, the FAO food price index rose by 4% compared to May, making it the fifth consecutive month of increases in the index value.

September 2014

In August the CPI rose 0.32%, with the divisions of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Restaurants and Hotels, Communications being the fastest growing.

Inflation in the last twelve months up to August was less than that recorded in July 2014, of 6.94%.
