Although the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Salvadoran Association of Airline Representatives (ASLA) opposed this charge, the fee went into effect on March 19, 2021.

According to the text of the regulation creating this charge, the funds collected through the application of the fee would be used for the administration and operation services of the canine binomials and the treatment of international solid waste and seizures of phytosanitary materials at the airport platform.

Weeks after this charge was announced, the Salvadoran authorities decided to backtrack and abolished this measure.

In his Twitter account, David Martinez, Minister of Agriculture, explained that "... days ago a note was circulated by IATA and ASLA mentioning to reconsider an 'agricultural fee' of $3.50 applied to travelers entering our country. Therefore, after a detailed analysis, I have decided to cancel the tariff."

The publication dated May 11 details that the authorities will begin with "... a detailed technical analysis process for the benefit of the population, which we will make known at a later date."

The low-cost airline Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos plans to offer a daily flight from Ilopango airport in Guatemala City.

The airline Transportes Aéreos Guatemaltecos will start operations on March 20, offering a daily flight from Ilopango airport east of San Salvador, to La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala. The flight between the two cities will take approximately 30 minutes.
