Agrochemicals: Purchases in the Region Remain Steady

For the second quarter of 2021, Guatemala maintained as the main importer of insecticides, herbicides and fungicides with $84.2 million, the largest supplier was China with 18.94%.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to June 2021, the main buyer in Central America was Guatemala with $84.2 million, followed by Costa Rica with $80.2 million, Panama with $64.2 million, Honduras with $59.8 million, Nicaragua with $55.1 million and El Salvador with $48.7 million.

For the period in question, purchases abroad by Nicaraguan companies increased 13.49% in year on year terms. In Panama they increased 6.2%, in Costa Rica 1.69%, in Honduras 5.11% and in El Salvador 25.42%.

Only in Guatemala, purchases decreased by 11.53% for the second quarter of 2021.

Origin of Central American Imports
As of June 2021, 18.94% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 16.55% from Guatemala, 12.49% from the USA, 10.51% from Costa Rica, 10.27% from Mexico, 8.63% from Colombia and 3.54% from India.

For the months in question in recent years, purchases from China have grown considerably, since in 2012 imports from that Asian country represented 11.42% and in 2021 the proportion rose to 18.94%.

Behavior of Regional Purchases
Between January and June 2020 and the same period in 2021, the value of imports increased by 3.51%, from $379 million to $392.3 million.

During the first six months of 2019, companies in Central American countries imported $316 million worth of insecticides, herbicides and fungicides, and purchases from companies in Israel grew by 12% over the same period in 2018.

Agrochemicals in Central America: Purchases Up 3%

In 2017, the total import value of insecticides, herbicides and fungicides in Central American countries totaled $689 million, registering a 3% increase with respect to 2016.
