Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In the first quarter of 2021 the main buyer in Central America was Guatemala with $41 million, followed by Costa Rica with $38 million, Honduras with $29 million, El Salvador with $25 million, Panama with $24 million and Nicaragua with $19 million.

Compared to the first three months of last year, purchases abroad by Nicaraguan companies increased 19% quarter-on-quarter. In El Salvador they increased 66%, in Panama 45%, in Honduras 33%, and in Costa Rica 9%, although Guatemala was the largest importer of these products during this period, contracted a negative variation of 4%.

Origin of Central American Imports
During this first quarter, 19% of the value imported from Central America came from Guatemala, 15% from China, 14% from the USA, 12% from Mexico, 10% from Costa Rica, 8% from Colombia, 3% from India and 3% from Israel.

In recent years, purchases from Guatemala have grown considerably, as in the first quarter of 2012 imports from this Asian country represented 12% and in 2021 the proportion rose to 19%.

Behavior of Regional Purchases
Between the first quarters of 2020 and 2021, the value of imports increased by 20%, rising from $146 million to $175 million.

For the years under analysis, regional purchases from China and Mexico increased by 4% and 2%, respectively, while the U.S. decreased by 2%.

Diaper Market: Imports Up 7%

August 2019

During the first quarter of the year, the value of imported diapers and similar items in the region totaled $76 million, 7% more than what was reported in the same period in 2018.
