Agreement to Amend Rates at Quetzal Port

At the request of the business sector, the government has agreed to revise the rates for services in the Port of Quetzal in Escuintla and port Santo Tomás de Castilla.

From a statement issued by the Government of Guatemala:

The president of Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina, met with representatives of the business sector to discuss tax rates to be paid at the ports of Quetzal and Santo Tomas de Castilla on the Pacific and Atlantic side of the country respectively.

Attending the meeting held at the Presidential Palace were the leaders of the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial and Financial (Cacif).

The private sector is asking the government to repeal the new tariff schedule in the ports of Quetzal and Santo Tomas de Castilla, saying it there is no justification for it and the competitiveness of ports is deteriorating.

According to employers, the increase is not only unwarranted, but also directly impacts the cost structure of firms, which end up passing on the prices increases to end consumers.

A Technical Committee has been created made up of representatives from the Government and the private sector with the aim of coming up with proposals.

The Technical Committee will find out about, initially, the proposals of the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial and Financial Associations (Cacif), on the issue of the increased efficiency of the Empresa Portuaria Quetzal.
