Agreement on Minimum 2.66% Increase in Public Wages

Public employees in Costa Rica will receive a minimum increase of 2.66% during the 2nd half of 2012.

Workers earning more than $532 will receive an additional increase of 1%.

According to the Minister of Labour, Sandra Piszk, this group represents 70% of all central government staff.

Piszk explained that "the increase means an outlay of $76 million by the Government and covers about 192,000 people", reports Nacion.com.

The 2.53% increase approved for the minimum wage for private sector workers in Costa Rica will be in effect from January 1 next year.

With this increase, a messenger worker who has an Unskilled Occupation and earns today ¢309,143.36 ($518) per month will earn ¢316,964.68 ($531) as the minimum wage, the government said.

Starting July 1st, private sector employees will earn between 3.96% and 4.2% more.

Blue-collar workers (construction workers, kitchen assistants, warehouse operators, etc) will receive a 4.2% wage increase, while white-collar workers will earn 3.96% more.

“The National Salary Council, composed of workers, business chambers and the Government, agreed with the proposal presented by Labor Minister Sandra Piszk”, reported Nacion.com.

Costa Rica's private sector salaries to rise by 6.58%

Workers in Costa Rica's private sector are about to get a 6.58 percent raise.

Persons in this sector and those who have a "semi-qualified" employment will receive this amount plus a 4,000-colon monthly subsidy of 4,000 colons (about 7.69 dollars).
Those who do not have specific qualifications will get the same salary increase and a 5,000-colon subsidy (about 9.61 dollars).
