Palm Oil: Sales to Mexico Increase 37%

During the first half of 2019, exports of palm oil and its fractions from Central America to Mexican companies totaled $87 million, 37% more than reported in the same period of 2018.

Exports by country
From January to June 2019, the main exporter of palm oil from Central America to Mexico was Guatemala, with $34 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $30 million, Honduras with $10 million, Nicaragua, with $9 million, and Panama with $4 million.

Variation in Regional Exports
Between the first half of 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value exported from the region to Mexico grew 37%, from $64 million to $87 million.

The volume exported also increased, in this case by 57%, from 114 thousand tons in the first half of 2018 to 178 thousand tons in the same period of 2019.

Export Price
Between December 2017 and June 2019, the average price per kilo of Central American exports fell 23%, from $0.70 to $0.54.

In recent years, the average price of palm oil exports from Central America has reported a downward trend, from $1.13 per kilo in May 2012 to $0.53 per kilo in March 2019.

December 2018

During the first six months of the year, palm oil sales from Central America reached $383 million, and exports to Spain increased 232% with respect to the first half of 2017.
