Abattoir Improvements in El Salvador

The government of El Salvador will invest $27.3 million in the national sector of municipal slaughterhouses.

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

In order to improve the quality and hygiene of the abattoirs that operate nationwide, the government will invest resources in building new premises, along with retrofitting and better controls for existing ones.

The plan will be implemented jointly by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and the Center for Consumer Protection.

It is hoped that this improvement in the cattle butchering system will energize the livestock sector, allowing them to operate in more sanitary conditions which will mean they can compete on a higher level.

An article on laprensagrafica.com reads: "The plan includes construction of 16 new premises, the improvement of an existing eight, the closure of several for non-compliance with environmental health regulations, and the establishment of management mechanisms for service delivery, as well as the establishment of monitoring mechanisms.

The project is already underway. In La Union, an estimated $1.2 million is to be invested; technical assistance to define management issues will be given, as well as the creation of business plans, whether it is to be a public-private partnership or a municipal enterprise."
