$523 Million in Port Works Planned

In Guatemala, different works are being built in Puerto Quetzal in a total area of 120 hectares distributed in land and maritime area, with a time to execute the work for 12 months.

The interactive platform "Construction in Central America", from CentralAmericaData's Business Intelligence Unit, provides an updated list of public and private construction projects that have submitted environmental impact studies (EIA) to the respective institutions in each country.

"Empresa Portuaria Quetzal is carrying out a dock expansion covering 77.89 hectares in the marine area and 42.11 hectares in land area.

The construction phase includes the following:
1.- Expansion and deepening of the current pier: the expansion comprises in lengthening the pier, to the same side by a length of 400 meters and deepening and in facilitating through dredging (berthing pit), a depth of -17.6 meters. the crest elevation of the north expansion will be +4.50m; same as that of the existing pier.
2.- Dredging of the maneuvering area and inner dock.
3.- Excavations in the land area for the extension of the dock in an area of 400 meters.
4.- Management of dumps, where the excavated material will be deposited.
5.- Construction of 6 groups of buildings in the northwest end of the port precinct.

In the operation phase:
1.- The dimension of the maneuvering circle of 550 m and the enlarged dock, mark the following vessels of maximum length that will be able to maneuver in Puerto quetzal.
2.- New panamax container vessel of 13,000 teu.
3.- Bulk carrier of 100,000 tons’ displacement.

The project areas include the following:
* Piers: 48,050 m2.
- Commercial dock expansion: 28,000 m2.
+ Length 400 m.
+ Dock width 25 m2.
+ Yard width 45 m2.
- Commercial pier deepening: 20,050 m2.
+ Length 802 m.
+ Width 25 m.

* Buildings and yards: 104,497 m2.
- Buildings 9,434 m2.
- Warehouse of administrative management 1,547 m2.
- Control tower 446 m2.
- Street to the north of commercial dock expansion 1,869 m2.
- Water tank.
- Container yard 80x205 m, 16,400 m2.
- Visitor's parking 6,071 sq. mts.
+ Cars 752 sq. m.
+ Buses 195 m2.
+ Street, landscaping and walkways 5,124 sq. mts.
- Dangerous goods and chemical precursors yard 17,213 sq. mts.
+ Yard for maneuvers and parking 5,245 sq. mts.
+ Dangerous goods and precursors 11,968 m2.

The project is located in the living zone of the Subtropical Rainforest (Temperate), currently the land use corresponds to pastures for cattle grazing, scrub, subsistence crops and scattered trees.

The time to build this work is 12 months."

Tender for $20 Million in Dock Construction

June 2021

Panama's Maritime Authority tenders the study, design, development and approval of plans and construction of the new fiscal dock of Puerto Armuelles, to be located in the district of Baru in the province of Chiriqui.

Panama Government Purchase 2021-2-03-0-04-LV-008417:

"The project includes the development of the studies, designs, development and approval of the plans and construction of the New Fiscal Dock of Puerto Armuelles, as well as the supply of furniture, tools, equipment and materials necessary for the perfect operation of the offices and dock area.

Guatemala: $15 million for Port Works

March 2017

Among the works planned by the Quetzal Port Company are the construction of a road overpass, a breakwater, and dredging at the commercial dock.

The investment plan presented by Empresa Portuaria Quetzal (EPQ) indicates that the total amount allocated for these works, to be carried out in 2017 and 2018, will be $15 million.

Guatemala: New Project to Enlarge Port Quetzal

May 2010

It comprises enlarging the port and preparing it to receive Post Panamax vessels.

Works include increasing depth at the south dock and at the main pier, reported Julio García, from Quetzal Port Corporation.

As a result, the south pier will measure 300 meters long and 14 meters deep.
