$50 million Investment Proposal in Port Terminal

In Costa Rica a private consortium has proposed investing $50 million in the modernization of the port of Quepos, to transform it into a terminal with capacity to receive large cruise ships.

Authorities at the Costa Rican Institute of Ports of the Pacific (Incop) reported that the offer by the Costa Rican consortium CEPP Consultants LLC, which was put forward last Tuesday and will be analyzed starting from next week, and relates to a project be developed through the granting of a concession.

Nacion.com reports that "...The proposed works include the demolition of the current structure, construction of a new port, improving the breakwater, creating boat repairs, dredging and building port stores, restaurants, cafeterias, banking agencies, basic medical services and sales points for local products. The remodeling works aim to facilitate navigation by positioning buoys, radio, tugboats, pilots, guides and technical and logistic support for large ships."

Juan Ramón Rivera, executive president of Incop, explained that " ...'The project will benefit the city of Quepos and its surroundings, since with these interventions cruise ships carrying about 3,000 passengers will be able to dock, which will bring with them an increase in the demand for tours, restaurant services, hotels, sale of handicrafts and other things.'"

An expansion will be carried out of the port of San Juan del Sur in order for it to have four cruise ships docking at the same time and add infrastructure to cater to tourists.

According to Rodrigo Castro, an official from Empresa Portuaria Nacional in San Juan del Sur, this project aims to diversify services and will favor a much faster attention to tourists and embarking and disembarking.

Improvements in Puerto Quetzal For Receiving Cruise Ships

Cruise companies need improvements in port areas reserved for passengers, cargo ships and vessel towing.

The director of Puerto Quetzal, Allan Marroquín, explained that the cruise industry, in relation to Puerto Quetzal, "... first of all, proposes having towing equipment that has greater capacity, because sometimes the weight of the ships coming in exceeds that which can be handled at the Port ".
