$4.5 Million for Irrigation

FAO's initiative intends to enhance irrigation systems in Central America.

The program was approved in the Ministerial Meeting for Commerce and Agribusiness in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Mexico would be included in the initiative, to "increase knowledge and administration capacity", said Alberto Cárdenas, Mexican agriculture secretary.

"Mexico is willing to cooperate with Central America in research in agriculture, forestry and fishing, as well as in technology transference, conservation and rational exploitation of water resources", reported La Prensa Libre.

Panama Earmarks $12 Million for Self Sustainable Farms

Over the next four years, the Social Investment Fund (FIS) will invest in 12.000 self sustainable farms and orchards.

This initiative is expected to benefit low-income communities.

Giacomo Tamburrelli, head of FIS, asked the Budget Committee of the Legislative for an additional $2 million for the project, adding that FIS has already organized most of the technical and financial aspects of the project.

$11 Million For Panamanian Agriculture

Spain will provide funds for increasing basic grain production in Panama.

The money will be used to boost rice, beans and corn production.

Victor Pérez, agricultural development minister, told Pa-digital.com.pa: "The Food and Agriculture Organization will install its Central American offices in Panama. This means they will store in Panama all the seeds that will be distributed in Central America".

Guatemala Negotiates $50 Million for Agriculture

Faced with a reduction in crops, the Agriculture Ministry is negotiating a loan with BCIE.

$40 million would be used for planting basic grains and the remaining $10 would be used in financial support for growers.

"With the same purpose, the Institute of Science and Agriculture Technology (ICTA), will launch an improved corn seed, its main feature being that it contains 90% of the nutrients of cow milk", reports Sigloxxi.com.

The FAO supports small farmers in Central America

The initiative will provide aid to small farmers in Panama, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

The investment of $12 million will be used to produce 32,000 metric tonnes of seed valued at $52.7 million, according to the Panama America daily.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization reported that it will support the increase in agricultural production by poor families in more than 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, by providing better access to basic goods.
