$23 million Investment in Banana Production

In Nicaragua, a banana processing and packaging plant has opened up in the free zone regime, with a capacity to process 3,500 cases per day.

The company Banano Líder is now one of the 264 companies operating in the country under the free zone incentive scheme. The new plant, located in La Paz Centro, León, has capacity to process 3,500 cases of the fruit per day.

Gustavo Argüello, Banano Líder's financial manager explained to Laprensa.com.ni that "... the amount of investment is the sum of two operational phases. In the first one the company will collect the musaceae from 300 hectares in the zone and two packing plants. And in the second stage they will explore 230 hectares more for bananas and 140 hectares for plantains."

Grupo Coen is already working on a project in Chinandega to triple Nicaraguan banana production.

It will plant 1,500 hectares of banana in Chinandega and will use modern systems for irrigation, drainage and air transport.

The project is being promoted by Grupo Coen. Every week ten hectares of banana are planted and it is expected that later this year they will have 520 acres cultivated.
