21 million cell phones in Guatemala

From 3.1 million lines in 2004, mobile telephony in Guatemala has increased sevenfold, amounting to to 20.7 million lines at the end of 2011.

In the second half of 2011, more than two million new users were added to the market, making the number of users around the country at the end of December 2011 20.7 million, according to the Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (SIT).

"Mobile telephony in the country has experienced an exponential growth of 553 percent over the past seven years, going from 3.1 million lines in 2004 to 20,700,000 in December 2011", published Prensalibre.com.

According to data from the ST, the company Tigo is the industry leader, recording 10.122 million users as of December 31, 2011, which represents 49% of the mobile phone market. Second is Claro, with 6,564,000 subscribers (32%), followed by Movistar with 4,029,000 users (19%).

The increase in the number of mobile phone line users during the first half of 2011 was almost half a million.

As of 30 June, the total number of lines stood at 18,528,667, an increase of 5.7% compared to the same period in 2010, according to preliminary information from the Superintendency of Telecommunications (SIT).

Mobile Phone Users Up 15.8% in Guatemala

By the end of 2009, there were 17.307.459 mobile phone lines in the country.

This represents an increase of 2.35 million when compared to 2008, according to the Telecommunications Superintendence.

Tigo is the market leader with 6,63 million users (38.39%), followed by Claro with 6,45 million (37.37%), and Movistar with 4.20 million (24.30%).
