$201 million approved by BCIE for Guatemala

The BCIE approved the loan for the construction of the Northern Traversal Road, with the project scheduled to start in the first half of 2009.

The BCIE approved the $201 million loan, which includes design, supervision, administration of the right of way and the construction of the road.

The route for the Highway, which at the moment consist only of a gravel road, will be paved during the first semester next year, according to the announcement by Wilfredo Garcia, vice minister of Infrastructure, made after the BCIE approved the loan.

President Alvaro Colom announced that construction of the Highway dubbed "Franja Transversal del Norte" will begin on October 28th or 29th.

The 356 kilometer route will connect the departments of Izabal, Quiché, Alta Verapaz and Huehuetenango, and will require an estimated investment of $240 million.

Congress approved a $203 million loan by BCIE, for the construction of the 362 kilometers of the highway named "Franja Transversal Norte (FTN)".

Last year, the government asked for a $203 million loan at the Central American Economic Integration Bank (BCIE). The funds would be used by the company Solel Boneh in the construction of the highway.
