2013 Tourism Promote Plan in Guatemala

The Guatemalan Tourism Institute plans to spend $1 million on online campaigns to promote Guatemala as a tourist destination.

Friday, April 5, 2013

According to Peter Duchez, director of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat), as time passes Guatemala must be promoted online, as 95% of the decisions taken by tourists are based on the Internet.

Siglo21.com.gt reports that "Canada, the U.S., Mexico as well as El Salvador and Honduras are the countries where the Inguat will intensify its promotion of the country as a holiday destination. This will be done, without neglecting countries like Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Chile, which are the priority niches in tourism ".

The Institute of Tourism anticipates that during 2013 the number of visitors will increase by 4% compared to the 2 million tourists who entered the previous year, for which reason $4 million will be used for promotional campaigns.

"It is a positive starting point, but it needs to be implemented and to spread to every government. In addition Guatemalans should learn more about the country, " said Andres Castillo, president of Chamber of Industry.

According to Duchez, one of the challenges to be addressed by the country is to have air connectivity, ie have direct flights from European and Asian countries with competitive rates.
