120 Companies After 15 Outlets in Tocumen

The opening of 15 retail outlets at Tocumen International Airport in Panama has attracted 120 companies.

Brands interested in being in the new Duty Free areas include Carolina Herrera, Mont Blanc, Cartier, Prada, Armani and Victoria's Secret.

Juan Carlos Pino, manager of Tocumen SA, said this month they will decide on the concession scheme to use for the commercial spaces, adding that in some cases they will put out tenders and in others will be resolved through direct negotiations.

An article in Prensa.com notes, "Pino said holding advanced negotiations with National Geographic to install a "museum store" in Tocumen that would be the fifth of its kind in the world.

‘In the case of exclusive services we will enter into direct negotiations, but where there are multiple suppliers then we will put out a tender’", the official said.

Tocumen Airport to Keep Growing

Plans are afoot for Panama's main airport to become a terminal for transcontinental flights, counting on the arrival of Asian airlines.

Juan Carlos Pino, general manager of Tocumen, SA, said the airport is looking to expand routes and frequencies, and in the future, "we are counting on airlines from Asia" to transform the airport into a transcontinental hub.

The Government will select the companies who will have a presence at the North Terminal and the concessions will be granted under the mechanism of an "invitation".

Airport management said the bylaws of the terminal allows these direct contracts, side stepping the mechanisms of PanamáCompra. A shortlist of companies has been made and they have been invited based on their previous experiences.

With an investment of $100 million, the construction company will deliver the work between 15th and 20th January.

Juan Carlos Pino, manager of Tocumen SA, told media that the new areas will be used immediately.

"Pino explained that operations will be carried out in only two of the 12 new boarding gates and part of the operational area, where is baggage moved and aircraft re-fuelled and re-stocked with food supplies.

Later this month will see the auction of shop spaces in a tax-free area at Panama's Tocumen International Airport.

The sectors invited to participate in the bidding process are, consumer electronics, perfume, leather goods and spirits.

"In the meantime, Tocumen’s management board have approved direct negotiations for the installation of the stores for Sony, Apple and Rolex.
