In the meeting to be carried out in Qatar on the 18th and 19th of February, an investment promotion agreement is sought.
The minister of MICI, Gisela Álvarez de Porras, told Prensa.com: "... [Due to] the fact that Qatar maintains relatively rapid customs management, which is a product of the high connectivity possessed at the Gulf level, and with their capacity to develop infrastructure projects of a very high caliber, they form a unique and strategic commercial partnership for Panama and the region."
Panama is hoping to seal the deal with Qatar and Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) before the end of 2008 to build a refiner.
Qatar and Occidental Petroleum have until 31 December 2008 to present the final version of the project and to make a decision, according to the stipulations of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2007 between the governments of Panama and Qatar, said the Minister of Trade, Carmen Gisela Vergara.
On a recent visit the Development Director of Qatar expressed his country's interest in investing in Panama.
The Director of Business Development of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Qatar, Nassir Jarallah Al-Marri, explained his country is interested in developing major business projects with Panama and that they are exploring areas such as maritime and air ports, tourism, agriculture and trade. He said his visit is to prepare an agenda for the upcoming official mission.
Opportunities in the Arab country have been announced for chutneys, organic coffee, pastries, organic tuna, dried fruits, plants, flowers and foliage.
The Foreign Trade Promotion Office (PROCOMER) has opened a trade promotion office in Qatar. Alvaro Stone, director of Exports at the office, informed Nacion.com that an official has been based in the premises of the Embassy of Costa Rica in that country since late last year.

In the period from January to November 2014 Costa Rica exported $214,000 worth of goods, up 9.2% compared to the same period in 2013.
The Central American country is negotiating agreements with Qatar, Turkey and China and has plans for another with Holland.
The adoption of these agreements would favor TACA (through Lacsa, registered as a national flag carrier), whose aircraft would be able to fly to these countries without restrictions regarding passengers or frequencies. For now, there are no flights to these countries.
