Corporación Agrícola S.A., the biggest importer and processor of rice in Nicaragua, says it will start producing rice in this country.
Taking advantage of high food prices in international markets, Agri-Corp will start with 1,000 manzanas under cultivation.
A manzana is equivalent to 1.73 acres of land. or about two-thirds of a hectare.
The company bought 4,000 manzanas of land in the Malacatoya zone, and will bring 1,000 manzanas into new production each year.
With a unit value of close to $41, the company has launched on the stock market 240,000 Non-Cumulative Preferred shares.
The structurer of the issuance is Invercasa, whose representatives described the event as "the first issuance of preferred shares in Nicaragua". The novelty of this story is that in practice, those buying shares will almost become owners (with limited rights) of a small part of the company.
The loan from the IDB will help the company refinance short-term debt, releasing funds to expand facilities and provide credit to small producers
The Inter-American Development Bank approved a US$15.6 million loan to help Corporación Agrícola S.A. (Agricorp), Nicaragua’s leading distributor of rice, wheat, beans, and other staple food products, to ensure reliable food supplies and expand opportunities for small-scale farmers.
