The ICE will invest about $325 million in buying energy from six private private hydroelectric projects and five wind energy ones.
According to the manager of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE by its initials in Spanish), Gravin Mayorga, the 11 projects that will be built by private companies to sell power to ICE will supply electricity to about 225,000 households.
The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad is to invest in improvement works at the plant which will increase the installed capacity from 120 to 140 megawatts.
Gravin Mayorga, manager of the Institute, said that the works include electromechanical improvements and work on the turbines. The works could be completed by late 2015.
Nacion.com relates, "According to the manager of the ICE, this modernization effort is being done in other plants which are some of the oldest, such as Cachí.
The mayor of San Jose and state generator ICE are proposing to install a plant to create electricity from garbage.
Plants such as these are on the rise around the world. In Europe there are more than 400, and more than 80 in the United States.
An article in Nacion.com reports that the initial proposal does not define exactly when the initiative would come online, and who would be responsible for converting the waste into energy, but agrees that it would be a private company, selected through a competition process.
ICE analyzes proposals from Electrobrás and Sinohydro for the Reventazón project.
Gravin Mayorga, manager of the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), said that participation of one or the other at the proposed $ 1.200 billion power plant will depend on the financial proposals offered. "In their interest to participate, these companies are endorsed by financial institutions in their countries.
