In the first six months of the year the income generated from this activity grew by 26.6% compared to the same period in 2013.
"... In the first half of 2014 10,338 people came into the country for medical treatment, generating $12,145,969 million in foreign exchange ... This represents an increase of 19.6% and 26.6% respectively when compared with the same period in 2013, when the amount of people who came was 8646 and revenue was $9,595,313."
During 2012, medical tourism generated $338 million for the country, up almost 4% compared to 2011, when it registered $300 million.
Figures from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT by its initials in Spanish), revealed that in 2012 a total of 48,000 people came into Costa Rica for the purpose of undergoing various medical procedures.
The goal for the ICT and the Council for the International Promotion of Costa Rican Medicine (Promed), is that during 2014, 100,000 tourists of this type enter the country, which would equate to generation of $800 million.
Hospitals are offering a variety of pre-paid health plans with prices starting at $12.50 per month for the most basic.
The plans offered by different hospitals cover services of hospitalization, consultation and lab tests for patients of all ages.
Mario Mendizábal, insurance analyst, explains that the difference between these plans and an insurance product is that with pre-paid health plans, “the customer is paying in advance for future medical services and generally the companies offering the plans are medical institutions”.
Guatemala's private hospitals are acquiring state-of-the-art machinery, including nuclear medicine equipment that can detect the evolution of epilepsy.
Engineers were working this week on the installation of a new magnetic resonance machine in the Centro Médico hospital. The machine permits simultaneous examination of the head, neck, thorax and abdomen, explained César Paiz, head of the readiology department.
