Despite lower volume exported in 2011 by Panama, sales revenues abroad grew by 30% compared to 2010.
Last year 13.2 million cartons of green banana were sold and the value of exports from Panama increased by 30%, thanks to an improvement in international prices and productivity, said Roberto Santamaria, director of the Banana Program at the Ministry Agricultural Development.
The effects of strong rains and insect blights, whose control is expensive, are the reasons for the reduction in the cultivation of this fruit.
In twenty years the panorama of the banana sector has gone from splendorous to sombre. While in the 90’s around 12 thousand hectares were cultivated, currently production areas amount to only 7 thousand hectares.
The Agriculture Ministry of Panama proposed the creation of a mixed public-private to run the banana plantations in Barú.
Both the Government and the interested company would invest $20 million.
"Roberto Santamaría, national Banana director, commented they are negotiating with several transnational corporations who are interested in the project. These are Fyffes, Chiquita Brands, Del Monte and Dole Colombia", reported Prensa.com.
