A tender for the supply of food to prisons around the country has been canceled at the request of interested companies, who requested redefinition of costs and other aspects of the conditions.

The Ministry of Government, reports the cancellation of public events for the supply of prepared food for the inmates of the country's prisons, published on the Panamá Compras website.
The possibility of tendering Metro feeder routes and Metro Bus in Panama City and San Miguelito is being analyzed.
Government Minister Milton Henriquez, said that the aim of the eventual granting in concession of routes by tender is "... that transportation be a single integrated system which includes the Metro, Metro Bus and feeder routes."

The payment to the company that wins the tender and constructs the new prison will be the land occupied by the current prison.
The new prison which will be built in an area of 30 hectares located in Pacora, will have capacity for 155 thousand inmates and will be built in 550 days. According to Angel Calderon, director of the National Prison they have ruled out building a new prison on the land now occupied by the Women's Rehabilitation Center due to lack of space and because it would have been impossible to carry out the work while the inmates were there.
The Ministry of Government has put out to tender the construction of a mounting platform and mobile prison modules in ‘La Chorrera’ public jail.
The work includes the supply and installation of mobile prison modules design and the construction of the platform assembly. The contractor will have 90 days to complete the work.
The approval meeting will be August 5, 2011 and bids must be submitted by August 12, 2011.
The Panamanian government wishes to acquire 500,000 BAC type ePassports, along with a comprehensive solution for issuing electronic passports.
With the appointment, "the National Directorate of Passports, in the Ministry of Government plans to introduce the new electronic Basic Access Control (BAC) passports, which are high-tech and meet the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
The new passport will have a smart chip and layers of security to prevent forgery.
The government announced that it is putting out to tender the production of the new Panamanian passports, which will happen following new and improved safety standards.
An article in Prensa.com notes, "The specifications of the tender to make the new passport have already been designed, Bernardez said, adding that in the coming days they will be uploaded to the PanamáCompra website. He added that the new document should be in circulation in 2012, but current passports and will still be valide and the population will be kept informed of how to change it. "
The government introduced a bill that will enable private companies to operate penitentiaries.
Once it is discussed by the cabinet, it will be forwarded to the National Assembly. The government intends the law to enter into force in 2011.
"Roxana Méndez, Government Spokesperson, detailed that the plan is to reform Law 55 from 2003 - which organizes the prison system -, to introduce a 'patronage' scheme, that will allow to pass prison management on to the private sector", reported Prensa.com.
The $148 million contract to build a penitentiary complex called “La Nueva Joya” was awarded to “Consorcio UM Panama”.
Four companies bid for the project: Consorcio UM Panama, Isolux-Corsán S.A.-Grupo Proinsa, Consorcio FCC SIEP La Joya JV and company HMC Contracting Companies. From them, only UM complied with all the requirements included in the bidding rules.
