Following an outbreak of paralytic rabies in Veraguas province, local authorities reported that a cordon sanitaire was established to prevent the spread of the disease.
Representatives of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) explained that the quarantined area is equivalent to a 10-km radius from the reported outbreak in Mariato district.

Producers and exporters who make up the Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture at AGEXPORT are extremely concerned about the grave consequences that may occur in Guatemala, as a result of the recent decisions by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food which in two days have caused the cesation of the country's exports worth nearly $1 million.
The Ministry of Agriculture has declared an alert over animal health and banned the import of eggs and poultry from several US states due to avian influenza detected there.

In order to protect poultry and so that El Salvador is not affected by avian influenza, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) has declared an animal health alert across the country, and prohibited the import eggs and poultry from the United States without proper sanitation procedures.
They highlight the need to maintain the country's 13 year long status as free of poultry diseases.
The request was made during a meeting held by members of the Poultry Producers Association (Proavih) with presidential candidate Mauricio Villeda who was also introduced to some of the needs of this industry which should be considered in his government.
It is the second such warning put out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food in Guatemala in less than six months.
