The tourism guild is asking for an improvement in air connections in order to attract visitors from more distant regions such as South America and Europe.
Leonardo Torres, president of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Small and Medium Tourism Companies, said that although passenger traffic increased 10% in January compared with the same month of 2013, air links should be improved in order to attract visitors from more distant regions as South America and Europe.
In 2013 more than 7 million passengers passed through the Panamanian International Airport, 744,000 more than in the previous year.
Data from the Department of Statistics at Tocumen International Airport (TIA) reveals that passenger movement this December was 1.8 million, up 6.1% compared to the same month in 2012.

A series of reforms to the Civil Aeronautics Act establishes a policy of open skies and eventual pricing setting.

With 81 votes in favor, the Members of Parliament on Thursday approved nine amendments to the Civil Aeronautics Act, among which is the creation of an Open Skies policy which is consistent with globalization and with the regulations of other countries, to enable authorities to establish competitive agreements with air transport markets on a large scale.
There has been a favourable response to the bill establishing an open skies policy based on reciprocity with states and airlines.

The Commission of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Legislative Assembly, reached a favourable ruling regarding the reform to the Civil Aviation Act, to establish in the country a "Open Skies Policy" and create greater competitiveness in the airlines market with fares which are more accessible to users.
Between January and August this year, the Panamanian airline transported 9.6 million passengers, an increase of 18.9% compared to the same period in 2012.
Prensa.com reports: "The subsidiary of Copa Holdings reported an occupancy factor of 76.8% through August, exceeding the 75.6% reported for the same date in 2012."
In the first six months of 2013, Copa Holdings accumulated net income of $188 million, with revenues of $1.233 billion.
