After suspending two power supply contracts with Bocas del Toro Energía and Coal Power, Etesa has announced that before the end of the year it will hire other generators to supply the 300 MW.
The contract with Bocas del Toro Energía, which included the Brazilian company Odebrecht, was canceled by mutual agreement, after the revelation of the corruption scandals in which the Brazilian company was involved. This energy supply contract was for 150 MW and the project had not yet started development.
In Panama the Chinese consortium Martano has submitted an environmental impact study to build a 423 MW combined cycle power plant in the village of Puerto Pilon, province of Colon.
Data from the Information System on Construction Projects in Central Area Commercial provided by the Business Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData, shows that on December 1, 2016 the company Martano Inc submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to Miambienteto build an energy generation plant.
The Public Services Authority is in the process of canceling licenses for plants for which construction has not yet started or are showing signs of not being able to move forward with projects.
To date the Authority of Public Services (ASEP), reports that it has canceled about 35 licenses and concessions for generation projects, using both thermal and renewable power plants. The total amount of MW that have been canceled is 700 MW in thermal plants and 150 MW in hydroelectric projects, which should have been ready in 2020.
The ARESEP is proposing including energy imports in the formula for calculating the expenditure incurred by the state run power company, in addition to spending on thermal generation, as provided for in the methodology.
The provisional license which had been granted to Coal Power S.A. to build a thermal 200 MW electricity generation plant in Colon, Panama, has been annulled.
From resolution AN No. 10872-Elec of January 20, 2017:
RESOLVED: FIRST: DENY the request for extension submitted by the company COAL POWER, S.A., a company duly registered on Sheet 827976, Document 2561851 of the Section on Business Persons in the Public Registry of Panama, for the construction and operation of a thermal electricity generation plant, called COAL POWER, to be developed in the village of Cativá, district and province of Colon, with an installed capacity of 200 MW;
The companies submitted bids for generation with hydro, thermal and photovoltaic sources in the tender for the supply of firm power and energy for 4 years.
"...The generation companies include those using hydroelectricity, and thermal generators using bunker fuels, but there was also a proposal that will generate energy with methane gas and one with photovoltaics."
The two 80 MW plants which the state run power company proposes building, will enter production in 2024 and 2025.
The proposal is detailed in the Electricity Generation Expansion Plan (2015/2035) which the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) detailed in its last request to raise rates, according to Nacion.com.
The National Electricity Company will have to convene a new tender to replace the four contracts for 520 MW of thermal energy maturing between 2017 and 2018.
In 2017 a contract for 80 MW with Elcosa and another for 240 MW with Lufussa will come to an end, while in 2018 a contract for 200 MW with Enersa will be finalised. The National Electricity Company will convene a new contest in which power generating companies based on natural gas, have expressed interest in participating.
The food and beverage company Florida Ice and Farm will be installing a biomass boiler to generate energy in its alcoholic beverages production plant.
The boiler will be set up in the plant producing beer and other alcoholic beverages and its entry into operation is scheduled for late 2017. The goal is to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases generated by the plant by 20%, as part of a long-term goal to achieve carbon neutrality in 2017.
Having delayed the launch of the coal plant due to problems in the turbines, Jaguar Energy plans to start commercial operation in the coming weeks.
Jaguar Energy's plant power which will generate electricity from coal will be ready to start trading, after authorities at Energuate verify the reinstallation of the two turbines that had problems and were revised in China.
