In an economy with a high amount of available jobs, the 57,000 resignations registered from January to May reveal a high level of job instability, which hurts both employers and employees.
Between January and May this year there were about 57,000 renunciations, which is about 3000 more than in the same period of 2012, mainly by people aged between 18 and 35. The predominant cause is the search for better wages and working conditions.
Juan Alberto Fuentes Knight resigned to the Finance Ministry; he is unhappy with the little progress made in tax matters.
In a press release, Knight commented the positive things achieved in his tenure, which include the creation of a transparency vice ministry, four information websites, and improving Guatemala’s standing in the International Transparency Ranking by 12 spots. He also noted that Moody’s improved the country’s risk rating, and that they avoided an economic recession.
President Alvaro Colom accepted the resignation of its Economy Minister Rubén Morales.
Morales had been the head of the ministry since March 2009. The reasons for his resignation are not yet known.
“Colom confirmed Morales’ resignation, although there is no official explanation as to why. Authorities will proceed with the required procedures at the Presidential General Secretary”, reported newspaper Prensa Libre.
