Campos de Pesé has indefinitely suspended the production and marketing of ethanol because the price set by the government for the biofuel does not even cover the cost of acquiring sugar cane.
The 40% decrease in the ethanolprice established by the government last August affected the cost structure of the company, which in a statement sent to the media said that the decision taken by the government "... changes the rules of the Game and violates legal certainty. "
The recently passed amendment to the law defines as a priority the use and import of raw materials for the production of biofuels and provides a new price for electricity generated from forest biomass.
President Ricardo Martinelli has announced that concessions for prospecting and exploring oil and natural gas will be awarded before the end of year.

Given the failure of the initiatives launched in 2008, the Ministry of Environment and Energy in Costa Rica is studying new ways of incorporating biofuels into the energy mix.
One of the main problems for the successful implementation of the National Biofuels Program, was the failure to have sufficient local supply of ethanol. No one was able to attract the attention of Costa Rican producers of alcohol.
The new Panamanian Biofuels Act provides that from April 2013 a 2% of anhydrous bioethanol be incorporated into motor fuels.
Under the law, that percentage will increase to 5% by 2014. The progression in the increased presence of ethanol in the fuel used by motorists will continue to reach 7% in 2015 and 10% in 2016. This percentage may be increased by the National Energy Secretariat based on the technological advances.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines in Guatemala is going to create an internal committee in order to study the possibilities of using plant-based fuels.
The law which enables the use of ethanol blended with gasoline has been paralyzed since 2008 in the Guatemalan Congress and the administration of Perez Molina has proposed reviving the project, by means of a ministerial commission that will analyze "the environmental and socioeconomic impact that such a fuel modification could have and what the potential use of biofuels in the local market is."
