The government has announced that with funding from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency four bridges will be built on the Caribbean coast, with a completion date of 2022.
The Ortega administration explained that $49 million relates to a loan signed with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and another $10 million will be provided by the state.The bridges will be built on the Caribbean coast, in the areas of Prinzapolka, Labu, Lisawe and Mulukukú.
The Brazilian construction company has decided to withdraw from the process of prequalification in the tender to design and build a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal.

The company Odebrecht proceeded to formalize its withdrawal from the prequalification stage in the tender for the design and construction of a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, based on a decision taken by the Cabinet Council, on December 27, 2016.
The consortium made up of the Costa Rican firm MECO and the Mexican firms Cal y Mayor y Asociados and Mexpresa has won the contract to design and build a bridge between Panama and Costa Rica, over the Sixaola River.
Thetenderconsists of the design and construction of a binational bridge over the river Sixaola, and construction is scheduled to begin in late February 2017. The new binational bridge will have one lane in each direction, and will include bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways.It is expected that the new border structure will be in service in the first quarter of 2018.
Four consortia have submitted proposals ranging between $16 million and $25 million to build a bridge, which will be 285 meters long and will have three lanes, over the River Virilla on Route 32.
The consortia MECO-Puentes y Calzadas, CODOCSA-FREYSSINET-IDINSA, OAS-Orosí and Constructora HSolís submitted bids in the tender to build a new three lane bridge on Route 32 over the Virilla Bridge in the cantonal boundary between Tibás and Santo Domingo de Heredia.
The Ministry of Public Works has published the request for proposals for the tender of the design and construction of a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal.
The companies pre-qualified to participate in the tender are Consorcio Panama Cuarto Puente (China); Consorcio Hyundai–Sacyr (Korea / Spain); Dragados Sucursal Panama (Spain); Consorcio Astaldi-Daelim (Italy / Korea); Consorcio Cuarto Puente (China); and Consorcio CCB (Brazil), which includes the company Odebrecht.
The runway will be extended so that the construction of the fourth bridge over the Canal does not affect the operation of Marcos Gelabert airport.
The initial idea of moving the operations of the Marcos Gelabert airport to Panama Pacifico was not well received at the time by the Panamanian aviation union, which argued the need to maintain operations there given its strategic location.
