The multinational Del Monte is now joined by Cooperativa Bananera del Atlántico, whose proposal to reactivate production of the fruit in the area would involve a total investment of $35 million.
The cooperative which already produces bananas in Changuinola presented to the Association of Agricultural Producers Rodolfo Aguilar Delgado (Aparad) a proposal to invest $20 thousand per hectare in order to revive banana production in the area which is currently owned by the former workers of Coosemupar.
The government is analyzing a proposal put forward by Del Monte to revive banana production in the area, which would involve an investment of $126 million on the part of the company.
The Minister of the Presidency, Alvaro German, told Prensa.com that "... the negotiations with the company will begin in the first week of May and are scheduled to last until the end of June."
Despite adverse weather conditions, the main producers of bananas have confirmed that demand for the product has stayed within projected levels.
Global demand for bananas remains "constant" and at "stable" levels according to information from leading multinational companies engaged in the production and marketing of the fruit, details a report by Thepacker.com.
In the first eleven months of 2015 Central America sold 4.8 million metric tons of bananas abroad, 2.4% less than in the same period in 2014.
The figures contained in the Central Agricultural Monitoring report, drawn up by the Commercial Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData.com reveal that Central American banana exports continued to show a downward trend, compared with the same period in 2014.
Standard & Fruit have announced plans to increase the total area of bananas planted in the country by 1,200 hectares.
The company Standard Fruit Company have agreed with the workers' union (SUTRASFCO) to expand the area of banana cultivation, confirmed Ramón Duarte, secretary general of SUTRASFCO to Laprensa.hn.
Both sides laid the foundation to sign an agreement that would allow for investments made by the company in the banana zone in the district of Baru to be viable.

Recently the European Union-Central America Association Council formalized the use of a Geographical Indication (GI) called Banana from Costa Rica, a quality seal that identifies the origin and prestige of the fruit.
Del Monte has replaced Chiquita in the attempt to revive banana production in the 1,765 acres owned by the cooperative of former employees, in Chiriqui.
Previous negotiations were suspended earlier this year when the sale was announced of Chiquita Brands to the Brazilian consortium Cutrale-Safra, who requested an extension of the deadline for negotiations until next December.However, the company Del Monte has also shown interest in reviving the banana lands, and will be reviewing and updating its proposal for presentation at the next meeting to be convened in eight days.
All of the production from 2015 produced by the union of organic banana growers will be exported to the United States.

The Piurana Central Association of Small Producers of Organic Banana of Peru (CEPIBO) has decided to send its entire production from 2015 to US suppliers, because they offer a better price for the fruit.
The Brazilian company Cutrale-Safra, the new owner of Chiquita Brands, has stopped the negotiations which had been taking place with the Agricultural Association to rent the land and resume production at the banana plantation.
The directors of Cutrale-Safra consortium requested more time to analyze and review the financial information of Chiquita Brands, temporarily suspending negotiations which were being held with the Agricultural Association Rodolfo Aguilar Delgado (Aparad) to revive the cultivation and production of bananas in Baru.
The main products exported were articles of clothing, accounting for 11% of the total, followed by sugar, with 9%, bananas, with 6%, coffee with another 6%, and precious stones and metals, with 3%.

The Bank of Guatemala has confirmed growth in exports in 2014 of more than 8.1% more than that estimated by AGEXPORT in a report relased in the second week of December last year. This growth comes from overseas sales having recorded $10.833 billion in foreign exchange.
Growth was seen in sales of pineapple, medical devices and food preparations, while there were less exports of coffee, electric cables and integrated circuits.
Sales of gold coffee abroad fell by 4.3%, medical prostheses by 7.8%, electrical cables by 9% and finally integrated circuits reported a decrease of 29.4%.
