Merck Sharp and Dohme has started operating a new financial services center in Costa Rica, from where it will provide support to the company's operations in the Americas.

An announcement has been made that the U.S. firm Startek will be closing its operation in the country and laying off its 550 employees.
Following in the footsteps of Intel Corporation and Bank of America, the company's business process outsourcing (BPO for short) operation has announced it will close its center in Costa Rica, as confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Trade, Alexander Mora in an article on Elfinancierocr.com.
Citi Financial Group is expanding operations at its shared service center in the country, where it caters for operations of the corporation at a global level.

The President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solis joined Citi in the official opening of its new facilities.
There are 285 multinational companies operating in the region, employing more than 87,000 bilingual people.
The figure was revealed by Javier Chamorro, executive director of ProNicaragua, during the Central American Nearshore Summit 2013, which is being held in the Central American nation.
"Costa Rica and Guatemala are the two nations that have attracted the largest number of companies in the outsourcing industry, with a total of 191.
Engineers in different specialties, sales representatives and administrative assistants, who are all fluent in English, are those most in demand.
The Talent Shortage Survey, conducted by ManpowerGroup Costa Rica among 620 employers, found that in the case of university courses "engineering (with their different emphases) is the only one that stands out in the list of jobs in demand this year ... ", reported Nacion.com.
The Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) in Costa Rica is hiring professionals who provide technical services in medical records.
The purpose of the tender is to hire individuals or legal entities who provide technical services in medical records, in order to support the work of risk acceptance and processing of payments, made by the various offices of the INS, specifically in the lines of Life, Accident or Health.
The National Registry offers online services such as email alerts, certification for legal entities, real estate, and cadastre and images, which can be paid by credit card or debit card.
The new website of the National Registery, www.rnpdigital.com, also allows online consultations, the purchase of services such as registry alerts at a cost of $15, certifications for legal entities, real estate and cadastre images that start from $5.22 (¢ 2,600) up to $7 (¢ 3,500).
Starting on September, the company will process the accounting needs of its European operations from Costa Rica.
For this, the company plans to enlarge its payroll from 250 to 315 people. It will look for bilingual professionals in accounting and finance.
Pablo Brenes, director of the company’s service center, told Nacion.com that “the company will hire 35 persons for September, and 30 more for November”.
BASS Americas, owned by British American Tobacco, will concentrate in Costa Rica the majority of its financial operations of the American continent.
It is located in the province of Heredia, and plans to expand its payroll to 200 employees. From there it manage the accounting and financial operations of all the countries of America, with the exception of U.S. and Brazil.
