Beerimports totalled $4.5 million in 2010, which is an increase of 14% compared to 2009.
With the entry of new brands from around the world, the Costa Rican palate has started to enjoy more and more beers, both local and international. Details from the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer) note that the beers come from Mexico, the United States, Nicaragua and Germany.
The Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer) will centralize the process of control of origin and certifications for all FTAs.
The new rules apply to free trade agreements signed with China, Caricom, the partial one with Venezuela, and the European Union, said Luis Obando from the Chamber of Industries.
"Of these four treaties, three have already defined Procomer as the certifying agency, in the case of Caricom the Ministry of Foreign Commerce (Comex) has been designated the role. Exports promotion agency Procomer unveiled a study of the plastics industry in the country, focused on business linking opportunities in Costa Rica and abroad.
The study was based on surveys to 52 companies operating in this industry, and some of the findings include that 78% of the sector is made up by small and medium companies, which require industrial and administrative technology to develop attractive permanent deals.
Two elements contributed to keeping borders open to trade: Honduras central location in the region, and the diversification and growth experienced by intra-regional commerce in the past few years. Even in Costa Rica, exports to Honduras were higher between August and September 2009 than in the same period of 2008.
In the past 12 months, pineapple exports were just $30 million less than banana.
The long standing supremacy of banana as the top agricultural export is being threatened by the continuous rise of pineapple. If we consider the first nine months of 2009, pineapple is already the top Costa Rican agricultural export, as it sold $436 million, ahead of $429 million in banana exports.
