Variations in international prices of refined products (gasoline and diesel) over the last few weeks have influenced prices in Central America, placing El Salvador in second place in terms of lowest prices in petrol and diesel.
Price of a gallon of regular gasoline: $2.15, El Salvador $2.22, Guatemala $2.26, Nicaragua $2.93, Honduras $2.94, y Costa Rica, $3.73.

During the month of December, the price of WTI (West Texas Intermediate) in the Gulf Coast of the United States had an average value of $45.45 per barrel, a decrease of -20,69% compared to the previous month.
The Government is debating whether to charge an additional tax of 1% on the price of fuel when the international price falls below $50 per barrel.
Under the law passed in 2009, if the price of a barrel of oil is less than $50 an additional 1% tax on the price of fuel will be automatically applied. Although the international price of oil is now trading at less than $50, the tax is not yet being charged.
