Authorities are pushing for a pilot plan to blend ethanol in gasoline used by vehicles.
The signing of this agreement is being pushed by the Department of Sustainable Development at the Organization of American States (OAS). According to Ruben Contreras, representative of the entity, the country has a mature ethanol industry and this will also help clean up the environment.
The presence or exclusion of the private sector in the Competition Commission, is the main theme of the discussion surrounding the bill being studied by the Congress of Guatemala.
Congressmen from the Unidad de la Esperanza (UNE) have requested the inclusion of private sector representation in the Competition Commission, a commission set up to investigate and penalize companies who use anti competitive practices and which seeks to prevent monopolies.
El Salvador-based Banco Cuscatlán announced that it will officially take over Banco Uno on July 1. Both banks were acquired by Citigroup at the end of 2006.
Grupo Uno, which owns Banco Uno and Aval Card in Costa Rica, also has operations in Honduras, Guatemala Nicaragua, El Salvador and Panama.
The takeover was approved by Banco Cuscatlán shareholders April 15, the bank said in a stock market filing. At the same time, Uno's Citivalores brokerage will be taken over by Valores Cuscatlán.
