Builders in Honduras are demanding a guarantee of payment or a deposit before starting the works agreed in the contracts signed with Fondo Vial and Soptravii.
Alejandro Alvarez, president of the Honduran Chamber of the Construction Industry (Chico), said that "due to the bad experiences in 2012 (the builders) have signed some contracts but do not want to start work".
Representatives in the Honduran Congress have refused to vote for budget increases where contractors bid low for works only to later claim large cost increases.
"They said they are not looking at the progress of the works already tendered, for which reasons they haven’t ruled out that this delay is a strategy to ask for an extension of the budget for these projects.
The Road Fund (Fondo Vial) has froze all contracts for repair and maintenance of roads in the country.
So said Alejandro Alvarez, president of the Honduran Chamber of Construction Industry (Chico), who explained that currently there are no contracts for repairs or maintenance, and that the government owes construction companies $48 million.
Over 20 approved road infrastructure projects will go out to tender starting on July.
Napoleón Bográn, from the Honduran Civil Engineers Association, recommended the government to use better quality materials when building roads and highways, noting that the current poor state of the country’s road network is a result of low-quality supplies.
