The only requisite missing for Honduran poultry to enter the U.S. is a certification by the Secretary of Agriculture.
Honduras is currently free of bird diseases, and to maintain it this way, the Honduran Poultry Federation commits funds to the National Service of Agricultural Sanity for strengthening control of aviary diseases.
"... the poultry sector is one of the most technical in Honduras. The country is free from four aviary diseases ... a must for exporting to the U.S.. Honduran poultry could enter the U.S. in the next months, becoming the first Central American country in achieving it and the second in Latin America".
78 million chickens were produced in 2008 and they expect to reach one million laying hens in 2009.
Jorge Ulloa, president of the National Association Honduran Farmers told La Prensa that they "will continue exporting to Central American countries like Guatemala and El Salvador. They also want to open the market in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the Caribbean," and that "they will continue exporting chicken legs to China."
