Western Union doubles its Costa Rican workforce

Western Union, already the fifth leading employer in Costa Rica's services sector, is to add 600 more jobs with a move to new offices in San José's Forum II building.

The new hirings will double Western Union's workforce to 1,200 by the end of the year. Western Union has had a presence in Costa Rica for 10 years. During that time it has invested US$9 million.

Private Employment Drops in Costa Rica

The recovery which started in September 2009 has come to an end in March 2010 and since then, more than 3,000 jobs have been lost.

The global economic crisis of 2008 caused the disappearance of 50,000 jobs in the private sector. Recovery began in September 2009 through March 2010 generating 36,000 new jobs. But since then, private employment has begun to fall again.

State will Pay Companies Hiring from Vulnerable Populations

The government of Costa Rica will pay $2,700 per person to enterprises hiring in vulnerable sectors and whose staff remain in their posts for at least 12 months.

MoneyGram Forges Central American Alliance with Citi

June 2010

MoneyGram International and Citi today announced an agreement to expand MoneyGram's money transfer services to all Citi locations in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

"This important agreement extends MoneyGram's presence in Citi's network across Central America," said Dan O'Malley, MoneyGram International executive vice president for the Americas.
