Guatemala: New Drive for Xalalá Hydroelectric Project

The Government has contracted, without using a tender process, the Brazilian company Intertechne for geotechnical analysis of the Xalalá hydroelectric project.

According to the National Electrification Institute (INDE), the contract was assigned as an urgent purchase. It has been divided into 3 phases, the first and second, in which $4.9 million will be paid, are for the evaluation of the designs presented in 2005, including geological, geotechnical, seismic and geophysical studies.

The National Electrification Institute (INE) will invite bids again for conducting the project’s social studies.

The original call to bids was declared deserted, after no companies submitted bids for building and operating Xalalá hydroelectric power plant.

The 4 month contract being tendered involves assessing the social situation of the areas that will be affected by the project.

CFE Mexico analyzes feasibility of the Xalala hydroelectric plant

The National Institute of Electricity in Guatemala (INDE) is in preliminary talks with the Federal Electricity Commission of Mexico (CFE) to carry out the study.

Alberto Cohen, president of INDE, said that the institute is not willing to let the construction of the Xalala hydroelectric project just die, and explained that CFE delegates came at the start of December, and visited the area between Alta Verapaz and Quiche where the plant will be built, in order to budget the investment funds for the study. This could be between $5 and $10, said the official.

New dates for Xalalá hydroelectric project tender

The bidding process for the construction of the Xalalá hydroelectric project was extended for the second time by the National Electrification Institute.

The new issuing and submission dates are set for November this year.
The board of INDE took this decision because it still working on modifications to the terms of reference, in issues that were questioned by those interested in bidding, changes that must be supplied by July 31.
