Regional Business Down

Between 2019 and 2020 the imported value of wines in Central America registered a 12% decrease, going from $86 million to $76 million.

During 2020 Central American imports had their highest point in November 2020, reaching a value of $11 million, this after one of the most notorious drops in the month of April of the same year which reached a value of $3.9 million.

Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers

In 2020, the main importer in the region continued to be Costa Rica, with $29 million, followed by Panama, with $21 million, Guatemala, with $14 million, El Salvador, with $5 million, Honduras, with $4 million and Nicaragua with $3 million.

Nicaragua was the only market in the region that recorded an increase in its purchases during 2020, reporting a year-on-year variation of 16%.

In the case of Costa Rica, imports fell 10% in El Salvador, 14% in Guatemala, 15% in Honduras 16%, and in Panama the decrease was 19%.

Chile: Region's Main Supplier

In 2020, 32% of the value imported from Central America came from Chile, 24% from Spain, 11% from the USA, 11% from Italy, 8% from Argentina, 7% from France and 2% from Germany.

For the years in question in recent years, the Panama Free Trade Zone is the market of origin of purchases that has decreased the most, dropping from 21% in 2012 to 4% in 2020.

Spanish Wines Are Gaining Ground in Central America

In recent years’ Spanish wines have gained importance according to the amount purchased, since in the first half of 2012 they represented 10% of total regional imports and for the same period in 2020 the proportion rose to 23%.

Central America Purchases More Chilean Wine

December 2019

In the first six months of 2019, Central American countries imported $38 million in wine, and purchases from Chilean companies increased by 11% over the same period in 2018.
