VI Round of Negotiations with EU in final phase

The negotiations are entering the final phase after yesterday's presentation of the sugar and banana offer by the EU.

Nacion.com reports: "This has do with a quota which did not surpass, nor meet, the aspirations of Central America.

Ocampo highlighted, however, that with yesterday's presentation of the sugar offer and the banana offer on Monday, almost all of the Isthmus' interests have been put on the table."

Other projects such as candy, pastas and sausages were also left out of the agreement.

On the plus side, smashed banana, orange and pineapple juice, tuna and palm hearth, among others, are products that will be able to enter the EU with zero tariffs.

Central America came with an offer giving access to the European market 84% for the exportable products and the demand to include products such as sugar, ethanol, shrimp, coffee, pineapple and banana.

Central America will preparing a "commercial offense" next week, prior to the fifth round of negotiations with the European Union.

The meeting that will be held next week in Guatemala will seek to improve its bid and prevent the Agreement of Association from stalling.
The negotiating teams will present a report of the last meeting with Europe and will evaluate the changes to the region's main offer, said Ruben Morales, Vice-Minister of the Economy of Guatemala.
