U.S. Limits Entrance of Panamanian Fruits

Starting next year, fruits and vegetables fumigated with Carbofuran won't be able to enter the U.S.

This was reported by Arlene Villalaz, from the Deparment of Agriculture of the United States in Panama.

"Villalaz reported that Panama, being a country that exports to the U.S., must comply with the measure, which was notified to the World Trade Organization on August 13th", reported Nacion.com.

U.S. Demands Carbofuran-Free Products

The northern country won't allow the entrance of vegetable products with carbofuran waste, an insecticide - nematacide.

Such measure will come into effect on January 1st, 2010. Costa Rica's Phitosanitary Service made an urgent call on growers to suspend its usage.

"In Costa Rica, carbofuran is used for growing pineapple, banana, coffee and vegetables, among others, but so far its usage has been limited", reported Elfinancierocr.com.
